To make your visit easier, here's some useful information

Free entry - general admission

It's free for the general public to visit MTG, and we're open every day from 9.30am to 5pm (except Christmas Day).

Groups, tours and schools

Special interest group visits, commercial tour groups and school students are welcome, but fees apply.

Please contact us for further information and costs.

Special requests

If you have a special request please talk to us about what you have in mind - perhaps you'd like to hold a yoga class in one of our galleries, sip cocktails on our mezzanine or take part in an evening art class... We'll be happy to discuss details with you!

 

 

MTG is a family-friendly museum, so bring along the kids for a fun, informative experience as often as you like - it's free!

 MTG Hawke’s Bay has a range of activities available for families, from fun activity sheets and weekend Drop-In Zone to interactive experiences, and these activities change regularly. We also offer school holiday programmes so if you'd like your child to take part just check out what's happening during the next break.

Pushchair access is available from the main museum entrance on the corner of Marine Parade and Tennyson Street and from the Herschell Street entrance. There is also a lift in the Main Foyer so you can access all three levels.

Baby change facilities are located in the Main Foyer unisex bathrooms and also in the Century Theatre bathrooms. If you would like somewhere quiet to feed your baby please talk to one of our friendly customer service staff.

Please note, children under 15 years old must be actively accompanied by an adult.

We're a must-see for any visitor to the Port of Napier, New Zealand.

The museum is an easy stroll across the road from the Soundshell and Napier i-SITE where the Napier Port Transfer Shuttles drop you off in the city. Entry to our award-winning museum is free, so come in and explore for as long as you like - or for just a few moments! You can learn about the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake and history of the Hawke's Bay region. Our inspiring exhibitions illustrate the life stories of successive generations of New Zealanders, our art and our culture.

We host a range of pre-booked guided tours for cruise ship visitors so just ask your on-board tours booking office for itineraries that include the the Hawke’s Bay museum.

MTG Hawke’s Bay regularly hosts special interest groups. We can deliver tailored programmes to your group based on our rich collections and changing exhibition programme. All group visits need to be pre-booked. Please contact us to arrange your group visit.

Coach Parking

Coaches and buses visiting MTG Hawkes’ Bay may use the bus stop located on Marine Parade. Coaches and buses will need to relocate their vehicles for parking after dropping passengers off at this bus stop

Coach Parking is available at the following sites:

  • The all day Public Carpark next to Marineland on Marine Parade (paid parking).
  • The non-restricted parking areas north of Ocean Spa pool facilities on Marine Parade (free parking).
  • The southern end of Marine Parade, past the children's playground (free parking).

It is recommended that drivers carefully plan any passenger drops and bus parking requirements as it make take some time to effectively park and transit from bus, especially during summer and when events like the annual Art Deco Festival are underway.
