There are over 3,000 objects in the Pacific and World Cultures Collection which tell the story of the global connection of Hawke’s Bay to the world.
Since the 1840s objects have been acquired for the museum through gifts, exchanges and purchases. Many objects have come from prominent collectors such as the Black and McLean family collections. Exchanges with other museums have expanded the collections holdings, such as those from the Peabody Museum in Salem Massachusetts, and the Denver Art Museum. Other objects tell the stories of people from around the world who have chosen to settle in Hawke’s Bay.
The Pacific Collection holds more than 1300 items. There are personal items, such as jewellery or clothing, weapons, symbols of leadership and spiritual practice collected over the last century, each carrying their stories and those of the people that made and used them. There are a wide range of tapa cloths. There are some other outstanding pieces including a Marquesian Club, some Fijian headrests and a Mangaian Adze.
Unique Art Deco heritage has been preserved with the skilful addition of modern theatre facilities making it the best provincial performing arts centre in the nation.
