The history of Napier Port is the story of the growth of our province. Students will role play historical characters such as a pilot or quarantine officer, then explore the ongoing role played by the port in the development of Hawke's Bay.
|Years||Years 4 - 8|
|Cost||$2.50 per student, accompanying adults free.|
|Venue||MTG Hawke's Bay|
|Learning Areas||Social Sciences, Drama, at MTG|
Students will explore the activities and businesses of the fledgling community of Port Ahuriri, from customary Maori land uses and early European settlement until the early 1930s, and discover how this hub of trade, business and interaction helped shape the character of modern Hawke’s Bay.
Students will work in groups to research the role of a port worker from the past (e.g. harbour master, stevedore, customs officer, signal station keeper, lighterman, etc) then present their character to the rest of the class in a dramatised retelling of an historical incident. They will then compare life at the early port with how Napier Port operates today.
Special introductory offer: This educator-led programme is available free of charge throughout Term 1 2016.
Optional extra, subject to the availability of a Napier Port guide: It may be possible to have a guided bus tour of Napier Port as part of this programme. Schools will be responsible for booking and paying for a bus. Please discuss this option at the time of booking.
